Ines Subashka: Introduce yourself.
Adrien Rudesal: My name is Adrien Rudesal and I am a co-owner of CrossFit Round Rock.
IS: How long have you being doing crossfit?
AR: About 2 years.
IS: Have you been involved in some other sports before that?
AR: Competed in NPC Figure Competitions.
IS: How did people around you accept the fact that you are doing crossfit?Did they take a jaundiced view of it?
AR: They were just happy I wasn’t doing Figure anymore! Ha! CrossFit was very scary and didn’t make much sense to everyone. I was a personal trainer at a globo-gym and CrossFit was the thing we all made fun of. Kipping pull up’s seemed like a way to cheat on strict pull up’s and not doing bicep curls was absurd!
IS: Do you have a nutrition plan that you follow? If yes, do you meet disapproval from you friends?Or do they understand why you eat the way you do?
AR: I choose to do Paleo/Primal. Zone with 3 to 5 times fat and little carbs mostly coming from veggies. Fruit post workout only. I have been eating so different from everyone for so long that it’s just a known thing now.:)
IS: What does crossfit mean to you and did it change your life in some way?
AR: CrossFit changed my life…but not aesthetically. I was a personal trainer with low self-esteem who never felt “good enough”. Even after winning overall at my first figure/bodybuilding show. CrossFit gave me the self worth I never had. It changes you from the inside out.
IS:What is your favorite WOD and which one do you hate the most?
AR: Favorite- Annie
Least Favorite-EVA
IS: Is it hard for you to combine your daily tasks with workouts? And have you ever used the excuse that you are too busy to workout?
AR: Very hard. Owning an affiliate being a Coach and Personal is not easy at all! There are many days that I my work out’s are cut short to be a better Business Owner and Coach. That is what I live for. I love to compete but if I had to choose I would rather be a good CrossFit athlete and a GREAT CrossFit coach.
IS:What is your biggest accomplishment in crossfit so far?
AR: Landon and I opening CrossFit Round Rock!
IS: Do you remember a funny story with you and Crossfit?
AR: At my first CrossFit workout going through the warm-up and literally thinking it was the workout! Not the case! HAA!
IS: What advice would you give to the beginner crossfiters in Bulgaria?
AR: Have FUN! Don’t worry about the clock. Practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes better! Always understand when people “don’t get” why you CrossFit. Yes it is for everyone but some people just don’t know it yet.
As another year has gone by, I decided to sit down, give myself some time and look back on what happened during 2011. I stepped back and analyzed some of the things that happened, what I learned from them and how they changed me in some way! So today my post will be a reflection on the year!
I am fond on researching, people’s behavior, why we do certain things, what hides behind our actions, our words and thoughts. Sometimes what we do seems so illogical and controversial that it is impossible to find a good reason behind it!
Did you ever happen to have a goal? A goal you chased, but kind of always slipped off the road, on that sharp, right turn? But you are stubborn, and instead of giving up, you started over again, but your mistake was that you didn’t learn from your last failure, and started walking the same path, doing the same thing, expecting a different outcome! I am not quite sure who said it, but doing the same thing over and over again, expecting a different outcome is a total madness!
Tell you the truth I’ve made that mistake a bunch of times! I am pretty ambitious and hard working. Challenges don’t bother me! But sometimes I get caught doing the same thing over and over again even though I know it forced me to fail the last time! I know it is wrong, but I still think that this time it is gonna workout!
Well, needless to say, I failed a hundred times, by acting this way. I am more than happy to confess that this year I finally realized that you need to change your behavior if you want to achieve a goal!
Ok, that might sound like a cliché, but it is so true! If you want to be successful in life, you will have to take some risks. It is easy to pick a leader and follow him, but you will never go far enough! If you follow somebody, you limit yourself to become only as good as he is! That is why you need to get yourself straight and decide what you want out of life! Then, dare to risk, dare to act! Do something to achieve it, no matter if other people see it right. It doesn’t matter if somebody has ever done it before you! Remember impossible is just an opinion not a fact!
Since I was a kid, I used to be really shy. I might have some talents, but I was scared to show them, because I was scared to stand out alone. Even in situations when I knew I was better, I was searching for somebody to follow, so I could kind of hide behind him! But as it is said, better later than never, I realized that such behavior won’t get me where I wanna see myself in life!
Now I feel strong enough to walk alone, but chase my dreams! And just to add up to this, I do not want you to become anti-social and never consider other people. Collaboration is really important, but you should know better, when you need to follow the crowd and when you need to take your own path!
If you could be in my head just for a day, you’d go crazy!
I think about a lot of stuff, I am always analyzing, planning, creating and so on. I have the habit of making things more complicated than they actually are, just because I put way too much thought in them. It is the same with the workouts. The more you know, the more you realize you do not know anything. You always think what could you add to the workout in order to improve. Well, truth is that sometimes you do not need to add anything, but rather take something out. Simplicity is the key! It is good to have vast amounts of information, but it would be that much better if you could take the most important out of it and apply it to your field!
What did you learn this year, that changed your life for the better?

It is almost the end of December and most of you are probably gonna make new years resolutions! I have never made a new years resolution, and I think they totally suck! How do I dare to be so harsh on people’s expectations, desires and will? Well, truth is that it is pointless to wait the whole year, just for one day. A day when you are expected to receive a burst of motivation to do something, that you are not quite sure yoy truly want, but everybody else thinks you should!
Most people, claim that they will begin eating healthy, exercising more regularly, quit smoking, stop drinking and so on, when the new year comes. But do they really believe it? Most new years resolutions are a product of society’s opinion, a product of the common knowledge and understanding for “living the right way”. Stop for a second, and think about your new years resolutions. How many of them do you truly, deeply want with your heart to happen? How many of your resolutions, come from your heart and will sure be giving you motivation and strength to keep going when the going gets tough?
My observations, show me that almost all new years resolutions end up with failure. It is the same as “ I will start dieting from Monday!”…and what you have two weeks later is that you’ve wasted fourteen days, keeping up with your old bad habits!
Change is not about the right time, the right circumstances… it is more about desire, motivation, patience, perseverance!
Come on! Tell me the truth! Do you believe in the outcome of your resolution? How bad do you want them? Is it just a matter of trends? Everybody else is doing it, that’s why I am doing it too! Well, things don’t work out this way!
When you decide to make a change, it should refer to something important to you. Something fundamental! Something that you not only know is gonna change your life for the better, but you actually believe it will!
Most new year’s resolutions are not realistic. They are a bold dream, a big gap between where you are now and where you want to be. That could be really discouraging! If you take it slower, one step at a time, you will see improvement, it will motivate you and keep you moving forward.
When your goals aren’t broken in attainable, smaller, realistic actions, you will never see your hard work pay off! That will most likely lead to failure! After all nobody likes busting his as off, without seeing results!
Almost every single person on Earth, will make at least one resolution! When January comes, everybody will start with big enthusiasm to do wonders and change the world, but in two weeks, most people will give up on the change, and live with their old, bad habits!
As a result you will have one more reason to quit- first it is not something you truly want( if it came from deep inside, you wouldn’t have waited till the end of the year), second others quit, that is why you calm yourself down that you won’t be the only failure…after all everybody else is quitting!
In my opinion the reasons are endless! Forget about new year’s resolutions and start living today. Don’t put off your life for tomorrow or for the next week! Your life is today! Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed. If you truly want something, start doing it today!

As Steve Jobs used to say “… most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Today the interview is with Marina Dekova, a lady that dared to oppose society’s opinion, and had the courage to go to a place where she feels good in her skin, where she feels happy and complete- the weightlifting room. Read the really inspiring and motivating interview and see Marina, just the way she is- positive, ambitious and hardworking!
Ines Subashka: Introduce yourself.
Marina Dekova: My name is Marina. I am 23 years old and I am from Pleven, Bulgaria. I have a bachelor degree in Economics. Though, I am the kind of person that looks for and follows her happiness and never put ups with the common “rules”, and that is why I found myself in lifting weights! It became my hobby and now it is becoming my profession- an instructor and personal trainer in one of the best gyms in town!
IS: How long have you been working out? Were you involved in some other sport before that?
MD: With free weights, from March, 2010. When I was in high school I did not participate in sports, I just played some handball, volleyball but nothing serious! For about four years I went to folklore dances, which kind of taught me to be disciplined and how persistence leads to results, as long as you want it bad enough and go after your goals!
IS: Do you follow a nutrition plan? If yes, how do you eat?
MD: I couldn’t call it a nutrition plan, because it is already part of my life and my day…it is part of who I am!
I follow intermittent fasting. I do not think of it as a plan, because I listen to my instincts- when I am hungry- I eat, if I am not- I won’t! There are days when I will eat in the morning, others I will eat only in the evening before I go to bed! I eat mainly fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, eggs, dairy, meat, rice, potatoes. I cook only with butter and I use olive oil for salads. I avoid bad fats.
IS: How did you eat before that? What kind of life did you have? Do you think that by following a nutrition plan you are “robbing” yourself out of something?
MD: I’ve experimented a lot with eating and starving, and after the long years with the classic low carb diets without fats, without any results, I got sick of it and I turned back to eating hamburgers, pizza, soda, junk food. I did not care what kind of fuel I provided to my body and I robbed it out of essential nutrients, which reflected my appearance! I looked older. I used to drink alcohol, smoked cigarettes, partied till late at night, and wasn’t active at all!
Just then, my mom came back home( she was abroad) and couldn’t even believe what happened with me for an year and a half! For about two years I had the typical life for most young people, but I didn’t feel good in my skin and I knew I had to change something. Unfortunately, I always found excuses, because I was scared of change and I knew that the road will be long and bumpy. As a matter of fact I wasn’t even aware exactly what I was supposed to do.
I did not have goals, I felt empty inside and my job, really overwhelmed me! Actually the problems began, when I started my job. Obviously if a person doesn’t follow his path in life, he can’t find peace and balance inside and the Universe is against him!
As far as the third question goes- yes, I rob my body from the poisons, because I love it not only on the outside but also on the inside!
When I hear somebody saying, how they can’t quit on eating junk food, I really wanna tell them that if they try real food, nutritious food, and keep on eating like that for a while, their taste buds will change and junk food want be a temptation anymore! It is part of the marketing of companies to make foods like that, so people will get addicted to it. I like it better to eat a salad with fresh vegetables, in combination with some meat. Or maybe some fruits! I rarely eat a dessert. If I do, I’d rather it be homemade!
IS: How does one of your workouts look?
MD: It starts with a lot of enthusiasm to go to the gym,or for my shift to end so I can workout! Every workout is a challenge for me, to lift more than the previous time, to make one more rep or to try a new movement. Every workout is different.
The first part is for some warm up, which is 5 minutes cardio, followed by stretching with some short circles of jumping, squatting, lunging, throwing medicine ball, exercises with a PVC pipe and tennis ball.
The second part is the main workout. I workout with compound movements. Most often I start out with movements that let me put on a lot of weights- squats, deadlift, bench press. I warm up with weights at about 40-50% of my max and then move up. The volume and intensity of the following exercises depend on my shape at the moment! When I am done with that, I take 10 minutes to stretch!
IS: How do people around you accept your way of life? Do they accept it or criticize it?
MD: I am a really positive person and I somehow do not see the negativity in people as far s my life goes.
I think that they want to be just like me, but they can’t or actually do not try hard enough! Otherwise I am surrounded by physically active people and nobody thinks my life is strange. To us other people’s life seems odd. But dear ladies, it doesn’t happen just by wanting, you need to take small steps forward so you can follow your goals, not just stay dreaming! It won’t happen by itself! That is a main rule not only in sports but also in life!
IS: What are your future goals, as far as sports go?
MD: I want to become stronger, have better endurance and work more on my balance!
IS: What advice would you give to people that claim they want to be healthy and fit, but always find an excuse why things won’t workout and never change their lives?
MD: In sport and in life people do the same things. For me this is lack of character. It is pure laziness – to want something, to feel bad in your skin but still not making any changes, and only making excuses to stay in the same place!
As you could give money for cigarettes, you could give them for better food, for more oxygen for your body…of course if you love yourself!
You do not need to workout with weights. You could always go out and run in the park or do some sprints. At home you could also workout, without taking too much time!
If there is a desire, there is a way! No excuses!
IS: What advice would you give to women, that are afraid of lifting weights?
MD: Just do it! You will be really pleased with the results and the transformation you will feel on the inside out!
IS: How would you finish the sentence “I workout because…”?
MD: I workout to be the change I want to see in the world!
IS: WIth this great, motivating interview I want to wish you Happy holidays! Have fun, be smart, follow your dreams and do not forget to take time for Tabata, while you are on the road!
If you are a beginner, scale:
3 rounds for time:
10 deadlifts( scale the weight)
50 single jumps on rope
If you are advanced:

I often wonder, why and when do adults start fearing to do things they were never scared of as a child? When do we become so careful, so cautious? When you were a child were you scared to fall on the ground? I guess that the floor was your best friend, and you spent most of your time rolling on it,jumping and falling down! Am I right? You weren’t scared to hang upside down from the bar in front of the house. You weren’t afraid to do flips on the trampoline! You weren’t afraid of climbing on dry trees! As a whole you used to take risks and enjoy every minute of it!
Why are you scared now? I often have a hard time convincing people to try new exercises in the gym! Most people complain their workouts are boring and similar. The problem is that you could do a bunch of fun stuff in the gym, if you weren’t scared to try them! When I dare to ask somebody to work on some handstand progressions, I get the perplexed look, the big, scared eyes, staring at me, screamin “No way I am doing it!” Come on! What is it that scares you so much, to stay with your legs in the air? When I was a child I remember, jumping in the front yard, doing handstands and flips. I never gave it much thought. I never overanalyzed the situation, and I never thought about the negative consequences that could follow! That’s why I never attracted negativity and I only got the positives from it- I just had a blast doing it!
The same thing happens when I mention rope climbing! People start shaking their head, and step back! Calm down! I know that when you hear rope climbing, your first thought is falling on the ground from a big hight! But shouldn’t be that way! Remember when you were a kid? You were never afraid to climb a tree! How many times did you fall? I guess none! Or even if you fell down, it didn’t hurt that bad!
Another thing I notice, is people afraid of jumping! Especially if they had a previous knee or ankle injury! It takes a lot of convincing, to make them give jumping a shot. I usually stay on the other side and hold people for the arms, so they could dare to jump, without being afraid of falling! Truth is that you fear is making things complicated and your fear is the one that might lead to injury! If you believe in yourself and your ability to jump, you won’t have a problem doing it! But if you fear tripping or falling, you doubt your abilities! When you jump and you find yourself in the air, doubting if you are gonna complete the jump, your chances of an injury are pretty big!
I love jumping higher and higher every time. I often challenge myself by adding one more plate on the pile and jumping. Do you know how many times I’ve hit my shins trying to jump? I can’t even count them! So what? You hit yourself and then keep going more carefully! Failures shouldn’t stop your progress!
There is a 40 year old guy in the gym, who jumps at 1metre and 20cm!!! The other day he added one more plate, and when he jumped he fell on his back? Did he quit? No, he got up, he laughed over it and tried again!
The thing is that, by getting older we start overanalyzing situations! We rarely search for the postive outcome, but more likely see the negativity! Change that! Be a child! Enjoy every minute of it! Dare to try new things, new exercises and you will love your workouts! You will never get bored, and you will have a blast!
At this time of the year, most web sites race to suggest the best “strategy” to stay in shape during the holidays. You will read different things, from the absurd suggestions to starve and then stuff yourself, to carb rotations and so on. Unlike the others, I won’t suggest you complicated formulas you could follow until Christmas and then eat everything, you see on the table!
What I am gonna do is ask you a question! If you are gonna stay in shape or not, depends on your answer!
Here is the question: What do holidays mean to you?
There are different answers but they could be summed up in two ways:
1.Time to be lazy and eat as much as possible
2.Time for rest and gather with your loved once
If you think that holidays is equal to sitting on the table all day long, eating like it is your last day on Earth, it is time to change that! The best thing about holidays is that they are great occasion to gather the whole family in the same place. Usually our life is at fast pace and we could rarely find time to be with the whole family at the same time. That’s why holidays have a huge unit role!
During the holidays there are a bunch of delicious and tempting desserts. Everybody is trying to eat as much as possible! Why a holiday lunch needs to turn into an eating race? Couldn’t you treat it like every other day? Couldn’t you just eat as much as you need? Who cares that on the table there are so much treats? All those foods are there all year round and you could prepare them whenever you feel like it! You do not need to eat from everything in just one day! Stop associating holidays with food! Holidays are so much more than a food feast!
This year, during the holidays, don’t grab the big plate, only to fill it later with a mountain of food! Instead, take the smaller one- the plate you use to eat in everyday! Grab a little food, but still enough! The size of your plate plays a big role, when it comes to the quantity of the food you will end up eating! In a big plate, the food that is enough for your needs, seems insignificant! On the other hand, in a smaller plate, the food that is enough for your needs, looks just normal and satisfying! That’s why the better option would be a smaller plate- thus the illusion for deficiency, that the bigger plate creates, won’t made you think you are still hungry!
During the holidays most people rest! I’ve never understood why people think that rest is equivalent to being lazy! Your rest is the time when you could do the things you love, the time when you do not have deadlines at your workplace, the time when your brain needs a rest! Instead of turning into a couch potato, and spend your day eating and watching TV, use your rest at its best! Take advantage of the fact that your family is around and do something together. Go for a walk, go skiing, go skating, do something more active! This will guarantee you a great time in the company of your loved once and it will keep you away from bad habits!
I guess you are disappointed, that I didn’t suggest you the magic formula, which you could use during the week, and then eat as much as you feel like at Christmas! Truth is, that when you accept healthy living as a long term goal and not the short term premise for future feasts, you won’t need a strategy that will keep the pounds away from your butt! When you stop creating all kind of excuses and reasons to eat junk food, when you stop taking food as joy, I guarantee you that you will understand the true meaning of holidays!
There was a proverb that whoever fails to plan, plans to fail! You have five days to change your mind! Instead of anticipate Christmas just because you want to eat all kind of treats, change your expectations! Start thinking how you couldn’t wait for Christmas, because you will see your parents, sisters, brothers, cousins! Be eager to make them happy, with the presents you made for them!
When you sit at the table, think is it worth it? Is it worth it to stuff yourself with food and then be sick? Is that the memory you’d like to have from Christmas 2011? A memory about discomfort caused by overeating? I’d much rather think about the food I will eat on Christmas as my body’s fuel! I’d much rather be healthy, fit and feel good so I can enjoy the small things in life, that will leave a nice memory for the future!
If you are a beginner, scale:
10 rounds:
40 metres tire sprint
Rest twice the time it took you to complete the sprint
If you keep on eating junk food… you will look like it!
If you eat healthy, you are probably gonna be fit sooner or later!
If you always call it a day and skip your workouts… you will never get that PR!
If you work hard towards your goals, even when you have something easier and funnier to do…well someday you will achieve them!
If you always find an excuse why things won’t workout…guess what- they probably won’t!
If you always try to overcome adversity, you will scare the shit out of failure, and your way to success is guaranteed!
If you always stay in your comfort zone, you will always stay in the same place!
If you dare to challenge yourself, you might be surprised by how capable you could actually be!
If you always look for the easy way in life, you might get to a stalemate!
If you risk taking the harder road, you might accidently stumble against success!
If you always put up with other’s people opinion and neglect your desires, you will always be a midget!
If you dare to put your best effort into every situation no matter how small and insignificant it may seem to others, you will fulfill your aspirations.
No matter the circumstances, no matter the obstacles and the hardships, everything is in your hands!
What you will become, where you will end up in life is up to your actions!
When you were little what was your favorite breakfast? Mine was pancakes with chocolate! My grandmother used to make a dozen of them every morning and I ate them all. SInce thetraditional pancakes aren’t healthy, today I will suggest you a coconut pancake that tastes delicious and couldn’t be healthier!
Ingredients:
3 eggs
50 grams shredded coconut
30-40 grams butter
1 banana
2 table spoons natural cocoa powder
vanilla
1 table spoon honey
Directions:
1. Stir the eggs
2. Add the vanilla, 1/2 table spoon honey and the coconut flakes
3. Greeze the bottom of the frying pan and pour the mixture.
4. Bake good but not as good as I did
5. Then cut the banana
6. Melt the butter with the rest of the honey and the cocoa powder. Mix good. Then pour it on top of the pancake.
Not long ago I had a conversation with a woman that has a strong desire to change her lifestyle and be healthy and fit. While we were talking about her present diet and what she could change in her nutrition, she asked “ Should we count calories?”. Without giving it much thought I answered “No!”. At first sight it might look unprofessional and wrong, but I will back up my answer!
When I first started following a nutrition plan, I was obsessed with counting calories. I was walking around with a scale and I was measuring every bite, and later on I used one of those online calorie counters to calculate my calorie intake. When the proportions between protein, fat and carbs wasn’t as I had planned it, I got disappointed and unmotivated! Every calorie above the initially planned was the end of the world! I had the feeling, that I failed and I was mad at myself for not being able to follow a strict regimen.
It was like an enchanted circle, where every calorie, every fat or carb in excess made me feel like a complete failure. I thought that it is impossible for my nutrition to be “perfect”! That put a lot of stress and pressure in my life. At times I felt how eating instead of being just a fuel for my body, became the main goal in my life. Everything was down to the calories, the proportions, the timing and the perfect calculations!
Even though I achieved some of my goals about my appearance, inside I was feeling unsatisfied and overwhelmed!
That is why I think that counting calories, leads to additional stress and besides that if you are not a bodybuilder, I do not find it necessary to be so precise at calculating everything!
Besides, a person who has problems with his weight, 99,9% has some other stress in his life that is contributing for him being overweight. Trying to calculate every calorie, puts some additional pressure to his life and that limits the chances for success!
Instead I always encourage people, when they decide to eat healthy, to concentrate on the quality of food not the quantity! That is the first step! I know that some days you will be eating more than you need, but right now that doesn’t matter! Real food, even when in bigger quantities is still better than junk food in moderation! You need to start substituting every junk food with its health alternative!
When you get used with eating real food, you can move on to the next stage- learn to have good fats(avocado, raw nuts, olives, butter), protein( eggs, meat, fish) and carbs( fruits and vegetables) at every sitting! You do not need to be stressed about measuring the exact quantities and proportions. If you still want to be on track with it you can do the following. Your protein should be the size of your palm (without the fingers. Carbs if they are vegetables should be twice the size of your palm, if they are more dense carbs, they should be once the size of your palm. Your fats should be the size of your thumb! It is that simple and easy!
When you keep on eating like that for a longer period, you will start listening to your body and you will know better when and what to eat! I know it sounds a little fairy, but you will understand it by yourself!
Counting calories and proportions, leads to way to much focus on your nutrition. As everything else in life, the more you pay attention to it, the bigger part of your life it gets and the bigger is the danger of it turning into an obsession!
Food should complete your life and not turn into a goal of your life! When you are not home and you do not have protein, fats and carbs available- don’t stress about it! Just get some real food- no matter if it is gonna be just raw nuts or some fruit. It is far better to pick up some real food than eat the junk!
As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve tried a lot of different nutrition plans. I counted calories, proportions, per cents and that always stressed me a lot and interfered with my goals! Nowadays I just eat real food and I follow the “rule” with the palms, and still sometimes if I feel I need to eat more I will do it. If I need less food I will eat less!
