One huge mistake made by most women and men, who want to lose weight is thinking that the longer the workout the faster they will melt the fat. I have friends who workout all the time- running, jumping on rope, going to aerobics and so on. The interesting thing is that obviously this approach does not work. I haven’t noticed some results and no visible changes. The hard work they put in, isn’t proportional to the results they get!
This reminds me of moments in life, when we think that fate has a grudge on us- we work so hard and the results are literally not there! Here, pops up the question why?
Because you do not need to exhaust yourself, you don’t need to workout all the time, run, jump and so on. In business there is a principle- the principle 80/20, that states: 20% of our efforts, lead to 80% of our results. It is the same with workouts. You do not need to workout A LOT, you need to workout the right way!
Besides that, with the risk to sound lame, I will remind you that the goal of your workouts shouldn’t be weight loss. Workouts will help you shape your body, get some muscles. If you haven’t worked out for a long time, you might even lose some weight at the beginning, BUT this will last a while. After that no matter how much you workout, you might get stronger and more athletic, but the fat you are trying to get rid of, will stubbornly stay there. What is the solution?
Your diet! If you wanna make your life easier and get rid of unnecessary anxiety, I will tell you something and if you use it as the main guide when planning your workouts and nutrition, you will get great results and you will be more than satisfied. Workout for performance, eat for weight loss!
What does that mean? That means, that your main goal in the gym should be to structure your workout, in a way that it will help you become stronger, in a way that it will help you fix your weaknesses and muscle imbalances. Your workout should help you get strong, healthy and functional body!
In order to achieve your goal, to get rid of unwanted fat, you need to eat right. Food is what will help you to successfully achieve your goal. Because no matter how much you workout, if you eat crappy foods, your athletic, strong body will be hidden under layers of fat.
This means that you need to eat clean, real food that will give your body what it needs. Food that will satisfy the biological needs of your body and not your hunger for positive emotions! Food that feeds your body, not your emotions! Food in enough quantities, corresponding to your daily physical activity!
So what are you supposed to eat? Here is a great article, that is really short but really comprehensive!
Here you can see what happens when you work out for performance and eat good, nutritious food!
And here you can read a post I wrote some time ago “Working Out for Performancevs Working Out for Weight Loss”!
What is your oppinion? How do you achieve your body composition goals? Are you emphasising on your workout or are you using a combination of well structured workouts and good nutrition?
